In the majority of cases, once the stabilization period is over, extensive green roofs operate almost autonomously. The plants most commonly used in extensive green roof systems are succulents from the crassulaceae family (of which the sedum species is widely used), which require little water.

Green roof and watering

However, in certain situations it is necessary to supplement natural rainfall with a roof-mounted sprinkler system:

  • when the green roof is highly visible and subject to strong aesthetic constraints.
  • when the plant cover chosen is composed of plants with high water requirements (shrubs, trees, perennials, etc.).
  • when exposure to sun or wind, or the local climate of your roof (rainfall, rain frequency, summer temperatures, wind, etc.) are not sufficient to ensure the survival of plants between two rainy episodes.
  • When the roof slope exceeds 20%. In this case, the water reserves of the vegetation complex are greatly reduced.

Several automatic watering systems are available: drip systems and sprinkler systems. The study of your planting project will determine the most suitable system.

Maintenance of the watering system is essential to the longevity of your green roof. It is carried out once or twice a year and consists in checking the irrigation system, reprogramming irrigation frequency and dosage, etc.

At Le Prieuré, each project is the subject of an in-depth technical study to determine irrigation requirements. Our engineers will recommend the most suitable watering solution, and all its components, in line with your project’s aesthetic expectations and technical constraints. contact us for more information on watering and green roofs.
