TREE ANCHORING

Trees bring shade and freshness to the city. Rooftops are no exception. A roof garden will be all the more pleasant if it’s shaded. What’s more, biodiversity will be richer with a variation in vegetation strata.

Planting a tree dozens of meters high means mastering a number of parameters: wind resistance, uprooting, tree weight, root development forecasting, etc.

URBAN AGRICULTURE

Often idealized, urban agriculture projects, particularly on rooftops, raise questions of operation, logistics and, above all, profitability. Implementation and operating costs must be kept under control to ensure the sustainability of projects.

In response to these issues, the LE PRIEURE design office assists project owners in defining their project.

Our solutions also help preserve water resources for controlled watering.

Are you a local authority, project owner, property developer, architect, landscape architect or ecologist? Do you have a project or an idea for a unique, aesthetic plant creation that would be a real signature for your building? LE PRIEURÉ puts its expertise in building greening at your service, and supports you at every stage of your project with its green engineering office.

Consulting & engineering in building greening, we can assist you, on request, in formulating your creative proposal for building greening.

You will be supported by a multidisciplinary team: project manager, landscape engineer, ecologist, architect or structural engineer, with dual expertise:

  • Knowledge of plants in urban environments
  • Mastering construction constraints

Do you still have questions about green roofs?

Can trees be planted on building roofs?

Yes, it is possible to plant trees on roofs. However, a number of parameters need to be taken into account to avoid impacting the building, and to give them the appropriate development space.

Our engineering department is able to calculate the right anchoring, depending on the wind load. It is also imperative to provide a durable waterproofing solution to avoid the hazards associated with root development.

For example, we have already planted trees several meters high on high levels (up to R+9).

How much weight should you allow for intensive roof planting?

When we talk about intensive roofing, we’re talking about substrate thicknesses of at least 30cm. This means that the minimum weight to consider is 400 to 500 kg/m². Pn talks about MWC (Maximum Water Capacity) weights, but this doesn’t include the weight of fixtures and fittings, which can quickly exceed 1 T/m² (concrete walls, trees, etc.).

What are the advantages of a garden roof?

Intensive roofing is also known as garden roofing. In fact, it’s a roof garden in the true sense of the word, as long as you can play with substrate volumes, plant strata, flowering, and so on. A rooftop garden not only cools the building envelope, it also enhances biodiversity. The garden can also provide shade and rest areas for users. Last but not least, rooftop gardens can be used to enhance the continuity of green spaces.

Why use substrate instead of topsoil?

The growing medium is specially formulated for use on roofs. Lighter than topsoil, it also drains better and has controlled mechanical properties. Uncontrolled topsoil can contain too much clay or silt, making it unsuitable for roofing. LP Flore substrate formulas are developed and tested in our laboratories, with different agronomic properties depending on the project.
